Summer’s arrival brings longer evenings and alfresco meals — and for many, a glass of something chilled. Wine critic Tom Doorley has singled out a selection of budget-friendly bottles from Aldi across Europe that he says suit warm-weather dining.
France
For lovers of French whites, Doorley highlights a dry option designed to complement seaside lunches and shellfish plates. The red recommendation is the Chassaux & Fils Côtes du Rhône, priced at €7.99, which he pairs with charcuterie and the kind of tangy cornichons you find in classic cafés.

Spain
Spain features both a BBQ-friendly red and a seafood white. The Baron Amarillo Rioja Reserve (€8.99) is suggested for grilled meats and outdoor cooking. For paella or other shellfish dishes, Doorley points to the Rías Baixas Albarino at €11.49.

Italy
Italy’s picks include a seasonal Chianti and a crisp white. A Chianti Governo at €9.99 is recommended alongside summer dishes that use fresh, local produce. The Specially Selected Gavi, also €9.99, offers a lighter option for warmer evenings.
Portugal
From Portugal, Doorley selects a classic Vinho Verde (€7.69) as an easy match for seafood. He also recommends the Animus Douro Reserva (€8.99), a richer red that pairs well with grilled meats and heartier plates.

Greece
Rounding out the tour is the Athlon Assyrtiko (€9.99), a Greek white made from one of the country’s most recognised grapes. It is suggested as a good partner for grilled fish and Mediterranean-style preparations.
