History of Cork City
The history of Cork commences with the foundation of St. Finnbar's monastery in the 6th/7th century. The Saint who died in 630 sited his monastery on a small island surrounded by swamp land. The river Lee flows through the city in two channels, which are spanned by numerous bridges.
