The run-up to this year’s Rose of Tralee festival is underway as 32 men take part in the annual escort bootcamp, a pre-event training that prepares them for the high‑profile role beside the Roses. The intensive programme tests teamwork, stamina and practical skills ahead of the festival in August.
Who the escorts are
The 2026 cohort includes men from a wide range of backgrounds — from farmers and funeral directors to personal trainers and pharmacists. There is even a party balloon salesman among them. Contestants come from across Ireland, with five escorts from Kerry, four from Cavan and three each from Dublin, Cork and Monaghan.

What the bootcamp involved
Organisers began with a formal photoshoot before sending the group to a packed 48‑hour schedule of outdoor activities. The men took part in horse riding on the beach, surfing and other water sports designed to build confidence and teamwork.
Other tasks ranged from whiskey tastings and dolphin‑watching to rock‑climbing challenges that required early starts. A paddleboat race provided some competitive fun, while a practical session at Tralee Fire Station offered hands‑on training — and a bit of mess.
There were also unexpected tasks to test attention to detail, including lessons in basic presentation and ironing. The aim is to combine social skills with fitness and situational awareness so escorts can support the Roses across the festival programme.
Organisers emphasise camaraderie
Rose Escort chaperone Mark Irwin said: “The Boot Camp is where it all starts. It is where friendships are formed, and the nerves get shaken off.” He added: “Tralee in August is like nothing else, and these lads are in for the experience of a lifetime.”
When the festival takes place
The Rose of Tralee festival runs from 14 to 18 August 2026. The escort bootcamp is a recurring part of preparations, helping to ensure the event proceeds smoothly and that each Rose is supported during public appearances and events.
Photographs from the bootcamp documented many of the activities and the camaraderie forming among the escorts as they prepare for one of Ireland’s best‑known summer festivals.
