Multiple people have died after a head‑on collision on the M9 northbound in the early hours of Sunday, Gardaí have confirmed. The crash, which happened close to Junction 3 shortly before 3am on 16 August, is being probed by officers from Athy.

Fatalities reported after early-morning head-on crash on M9 motorway
Gardaí say a vehicle was travelling south on the northbound carriageway of the M9 between Junctions 3 and 4 when it struck another car head‑on at about 3am. Emergency services attended the scene and a Garda forensic collision examination is planned.
Casualties and hospital transfers
The collision resulted in multiple fatalities, Gardaí confirmed. Several occupants of the second vehicle were taken to hospital.
The female driver and the front passenger, both in their 30s, were transferred to Tallaght University Hospital and are listed in critical condition. A rear‑seat passenger in her 20s was brought to St Luke’s General Hospital in a serious condition.
A child from the same vehicle was taken to Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin and is also in a serious condition.
Road closures and local disruption
The stretch of the M9 between Junctions 3 and 4 is closed in both directions. Local diversions are in place while Gardaí continue their enquiries and clear the scene.
Appeal for witnesses
Investigating officers have asked anyone who saw the collision, or who was driving on the M9 between 2am and 3am, to come forward. In particular, Gardaí are seeking motorists with dashcam footage covering the area at that time.
