A travel TikTok posted from Hurghada has stirred conversation after the creator revealed how much she paid for a McDonald’s meal in Egypt. The clip — and the price she shared — prompted viewers to compare fast-food costs across countries and question why prices can feel so different when travelling.
What the video shows
The creator, who posts as Suzanna Travel Solo, filmed her order inside a Hurghada restaurant and talked viewers through each item. She showed a strawberry dessert, a four-piece portion of chicken nuggets, potato wedges with sweet-and-sour sauce instead of fries, a Big Mac with its sauce, a chicken sandwich she called her favourite, and a chicken wrap she planned to take on the plane.

She said the whole meal cost £8.09 (€9.35) and added that, to her taste, the food was better than what she’s used to at home — and roughly “half the price”, in her words.

Why the same meal costs less in Egypt
There are several straightforward reasons a fast-food purchase can be cheaper in Egypt. Broadly, menu prices reflect the local cost of living: labour, rent and many overheads are lower than in the UK or Ireland. Ingredients sourced locally also reduce costs compared with markets that import more food.
Currency differences play a large role too. The Egyptian Pound (EGP) has a weaker exchange rate against the pound sterling and the euro, so when tourists convert prices the sums can look especially small.
That apparent bargain, however, does not necessarily mean the meal is inexpensive for an average Egyptian worker. Local purchasing power and wages alter what counts as affordable in each country.
How that stacks up to UK and Irish prices
To give context to Suzanna’s reaction: a standard McChicken Sandwich in the UK is reported to cost between £4.19 and £5.29, depending on location. In Ireland a single McChicken is roughly €4.10, while a McCrispy is around €6.30.
Viewed against those figures, Suzanna’s full order in Hurghada looked like good value to many of her followers. One viewer commented they were “so shocked” at the price; Suzanna replied simply, “Yep.”
McDonald’s has been contacted for further comment on local pricing but had not responded at the time of posting.
