Getting there and timing
The only public access is by ferry from Ballycastle Harbour; the crossing takes roughly 40 minutes. Because sailings can be affected by weather, check timetables in advance and book tickets early, particularly during the summer months when demand is higher.
Rathlin’s exposed position on the Atlantic means conditions can change quickly. Take waterproof and windproof clothing even if the forecast looks calm.

Wildlife, safety and visitor services
Rathlin is an important refuge for seabirds, including puffins and razorbills. The RSPB Rathlin West Light Seabird Centre operates seasonally; consult rspb.org.uk for current opening times. Puffin-watching is generally best between May and July.
Coastal tracks can be narrow and sometimes unstable. Keep a safe distance from cliff edges and supervise children closely near the shore.
History and local character
The island supports a small community of roughly 140 residents and carries a long human story intertwined with seafaring tradition. Folklore also clings to the crossing — the water between the mainland and Rathlin is named the Sea of Mole in local tales and is linked to the legend of the Children of Lir.
