Prison authorities discovered Brendan Gahan, 39, shortly before midnight on Thursday after an incident in his cell. Gardaí and prison staff say he had been allegedly assaulted with a bladed instrument.
Mr Gahan was serving a sentence of three years and nine months for possession of drugs with intent to sell or supply. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigation and arrest
Gardaí confirmed they have arrested a man in his 40s in connection with the death. “A male aged in his 40s has been arrested in connection with this investigation,” a Garda statement said.
The arrested man is held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Dublin Garda station. Investigations are ongoing and authorities say a post-mortem examination will determine the course of their inquiries.
Prison service response
The Irish Prison Service formally confirmed the death at Wheatfield Prison on August 13. In a statement, the service said all deaths in custody are examined by the Irish Prison Service, the Inspector of Prisons and An Garda Síochána where circumstances warrant.
The service added it had informed next of kin and offered condolences to the deceased’s family and friends.
Authorities have not released further details while the investigation continues. Updates will depend on the outcome of ongoing inquiries and the post-mortem report.
