What happened in Killarney
Gardaí launched a murder investigation after Jamey Carney’s body was discovered at her house on Muckross Road, Killarney, on Tuesday morning. Officers have been following multiple lines of inquiry since then.
Investigators believe the person of interest travelled from Killarney to Dublin by bus in the early hours of Tuesday before flying to the Middle East, the region where he is originally from.
International policing and legal hurdles
Gardaí had already alerted international agencies, including Interpol and Europol, as part of efforts to trace the individual and secure cooperation abroad.
Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan said gardai will now engage directly with police in Jordan to pursue a clear line of inquiry. He stressed that the force will follow up regardless of location, telling reporters: “No matter where you are, the gardaí will seek to pursue you.”
O’Callaghan acknowledged the investigation faces legal complications because Ireland does not have extradition treaties with Jordan or Syria. He cautioned the situation is challenging but pointed to past cases where cooperation with other countries, including an agreement with the United Arab Emirates, enabled suspects to be returned to face charges.
