Ben Shephard says marriage with Annie sees them living ‘quite separate’ lives

Ben Shephard has opened up about the private rhythm of his marriage to Annie Perks, describing a partnership in which the couple often lead largely separate lives. He says the arrangement suits them as they balance demanding careers and family commitments.

Where their story began

Shephard and Annie Perks met while studying at the University of Birmingham, where he was enrolled on a drama, dance and theatre arts course. The pair began their relationship in 1995 and went on to have two sons, but they have generally kept their family life away from public view.

A marriage that allows space

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Shephard described his wife as more naturally solitary. He said: ‘Annie is much more solitary than me. She’s much happier in her own company. ‘Half the time she’s like: “I need a bit of space. Can you leave me alone for five seconds, please?”‘

He added plainly: ‘We do live quite separate lives.’

Work, hobbies and daily routines

The presenter explained that work keeps him away frequently, while Perks pursues her own professional interests in garden and interior design. When he is free, Shephard said he prefers to get outdoors and do something physical.

Their children and next steps

Their elder son, Sam, is studying maths at university. Their younger son, Jack, is working as a teaching assistant to save for travel.

Reflecting on that stage of life on the White Wine Question Time podcast, Shephard said: ‘We do miss him, and Annie misses him dearly, but it’s just such an exciting time. I’m jealous they’ve got so much ahead.’

The couple’s approach underlines a low-key, practical model of family life: public figures who maintain privacy while managing separate careers and personal space. For them, Shephard suggests, it simply works.
