Holidaymakers flying from Shannon Airport faced delays and missing luggage after a fault hit the airport’s baggage system on Saturday. The technical problem lasted several hours and left some passengers arriving at their destinations without their checked bags.
Fault in the baggage system
Shannon Airport confirmed a malfunction affected its baggage handling system on Saturday morning. The spokesperson told the Irish Examiner the problem was fixed within a few hours and that runway and flight operations continued while engineers worked.

Despite that, the airport acknowledged that “some checked baggage was unable to travel on the same flight as passengers.” It said it is coordinating with airline partners to deliver delayed bags as quickly as possible and apologised to those affected.
Angry passengers share their experiences
Several travellers took to social media to describe long waits and missing belongings after landing. Among them was influencer Aoibheann Fitz, who said on Instagram that only 12 suitcases from a full Ryanair flight had made it onto the aircraft.
Fitz wrote that she and her group arrived in Tenerife with no luggage, “no make-up, not a thing,” and that they were running out of patience and suitable clothes while they waited for their suitcases to arrive.
Another passenger reported receiving a single email from Tenerife airport stating it did not know when their bags would arrive. She said travellers expected clearer communication and still did not know whether their luggage had even left Shannon.
What travellers should expect next
The airport says it is following standard procedures to reunite passengers with delayed baggage. Affected travellers should hear from their airline about the next steps, including delivery arrangements once baggage is located.
For now, the incident highlights how a brief technical fault can cause significant inconvenience for holidaymakers, particularly those who depend on checked items for flights to long-haul or package destinations.
