A black Labrador was rescued from Ben Nevis after becoming critically ill during a walk, in an incident vets believe was caused by eating discarded cannabis. The dog, named Tokyo, has since recovered following emergency treatment.
Collapse on the mountain
Tokyo, a working Labrador, collapsed about halfway up Ben Nevis while out with her owner, Christina Bluhme, a dog trainer from Surrey. The dog suddenly lost the ability to walk and became drowsy, prompting a call for help to the volunteer rescue service.

Rescue and emergency care
Members of the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team reached Tokyo and carried her down the mountain on a stretcher. The team then transported her to Crown Vets for urgent treatment.
Tokyo remained unconscious for much of the descent and into the night at the veterinary clinic, but vets reported she made a full recovery by the following day.
Owner and rescue team’s account
Bluhme posted about the incident on social media, saying she feared she might lose her dog as Tokyo drifted in and out of consciousness. She thanked the rescue volunteers for their support, noting that carrying a 25kg Labrador down the peak on her own would have been impossible.
The Lochaber team also updated followers on Facebook, confirming they had helped a collapsed dog on Sunday and expressing relief that Tokyo was now well. They said it is suspected Tokyo became critically unwell after ingesting something found on the trail, and thanked Crown Vets and the owner for the information and photos.
Bluhme added that she hoped sharing Tokyo’s experience would help other dog owners recognise signs of poisoning and seek veterinary help quickly when needed.
