An eight-year-old girl is reported to be in a stable condition in hospital after a violent incident at a family home near Dungannon that left a 61-year-old man dead and a 48-year-old woman injured. Police have arrested a 16-year-old and secured extra time to question him over the alleged murder.

What happened in Lisnahull

Police received a call just after 10:55am on Saturday about an ongoing disturbance at a house in the Lisnahull area of Dungannon, Co Tyrone. Officers arrived shortly afterwards and found a man deceased, his wife injured, and their young daughter seriously hurt.

First responders began immediate medical care at the scene. Officers said those early actions helped stabilise the child and gave her a better chance of recovery.

Victims and family support

The deceased man, aged 61, has not been named. He is reported to have been originally from Guinea-Bissau and to have lived in Northern Ireland for more than two decades.

The 48-year-old woman, understood to be the man’s wife, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and has since been discharged from hospital. Specialist officers are supporting the wider family circle, and police are liaising with the relevant consulate.

Investigation, arrest and public safety

The PSNI confirmed the arrest of a 16-year-old, who remains in custody. On Monday they were granted an additional 36 hours to question him in connection with the alleged murder.

Police have urged the public to avoid speculation. Superintendent Peter Stevenson said investigators do not believe there is an ongoing risk to the public and that, at this stage, they are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.

The PSNI extended its sympathies to the family and said specialist officers would continue to provide support as enquiries progress.
