Mayo pub earns place on Forbes Travel Guide’s global list of top bars

A bar at Ashford Castle in County Mayo has been named among the world’s most prestigious hotel bars by Forbes Travel Guide, joining a short list of just 37 venues selected for the honour. The recognition underlines the property’s standing within the UK and Ireland hospitality scene and highlights the growing profile of premium hotel bars globally.

Global programme and judging

The Forbes awards cover venues across more than 18 countries and judge bars and restaurants on a wide range of factors, from presentation to service. The programme is new, having launched in 2025, and aims to identify hotel bars that combine style with consistently high standards.

Bastien Gardrat, the guide’s Global Spirits Ambassador, described the criteria: “These awards highlight sophisticated ambience, elevated service, artfully curated wine lists and cocktails that are skilfully crafted and creatively presented. These are elements that come together to create an unforgettable hotel bar experience.”

The Prince of Wales Bar stands out

The establishment at Ashford Castle — the Prince of Wales Bar — secured a place on Forbes’ list in the latest round of selections. The bar sits within one of Ireland’s most famous castle hotels and offers an atmosphere that recalls Edwardian grandeur and restraint.

Ashford Castle itself holds a notable distinction: it is the only property in the UK and Ireland to have been awarded a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating for both its hotel and its spa.

Signature cocktail and craft

To qualify, bars needed a signature cocktail that demonstrates creativity and technical skill. Ashford Castle’s offering, called The Last High King, blends Slane Triple Cask Irish Whiskey with Antica Formula vermouth and Aperol. The drink was singled out by judges as an example of the bar team’s knowledge and inventiveness.

Response from Ashford Castle

Niall Rochford, director of the Ashford Castle estate, welcomed the recognition and linked it to the venue’s atmosphere and team. He said: “It’s a combination of setting, service and history together with the expertise and personality of the bar team that make our bar so special. Guests pop in for a drink and stay for the stories, and I believe we offer something unique that’s an integral part of the Ashford Castle experience. It’s a huge testament to Noli and all of his team that the Prince of Wales Bar is one of just 37 bars singled out by Forbes for this recognition. An incredible accolade and achievement.”
