Journalist Siún Ní Dhuinn was a guest of the Cork International Hotel for a short review stay and reports on how the property performs for families travelling with young children. Her visit combined city sights, a trip to Fota Wildlife Park and an assessment of the hotel’s facilities and food.
First impressions and family facilities
Arriving after a nearly three-hour drive with a restless toddler, the immediate welcome mattered. Staff greeted us warmly, and the hotel’s dedicated playroom on the first floor proved a genuine lifesaver — a safe, well-stocked space where a two-year-old could run, play and burn off energy.

Our room arrangement consisted of two adjoining rooms, which included a small play tent, blanket and cushions that felt thoughtfully chosen for a young child. Despite the hotel’s location beside Cork International Airport, aircraft noise did not disrupt our stay; watching planes take off became an unexpected bit of entertainment for the little one.
Dining: relaxed, child-friendly service with a few notes
We ate dinner in The New Yorker restaurant. Staff were attentive to families, handing over crayons and a colouring book and doing their best to keep plates warm when a toddler decided the hotel foyer deserved another visit.
The starter of chicken wings was well cooked. For mains I tried the seafood pappardelle: generous in portion and texture, though I found it could have used a touch more seasoning. We didn’t manage to finish dessert in the dining room, but the crème brûlée brought back to the room delivered the expected crack of caramelised sugar and smooth custard.
Fota Wildlife Park — close and rewarding
The hotel currently offers a package that includes complimentary entry to Fota Wildlife Park, and we took advantage of it. The visit lived up to expectations: lions, giraffes, penguins and seahorses were among the highlights, and the layout of the park makes it easy to feel close to the animals.
Earlier in our brief time in Cork we also enjoyed spotting a variety of other animals around the city and surrounding attractions — from piglets to cows and, unexpectedly, a snake during one of our outdoor stops.
Breakfast and overall service
Cork International Hotel was recently recognised for having an outstanding breakfast offering, and our two mornings there supported that claim. The selection was wide, items were fresh and well presented. I particularly appreciated the bircher muesli and the hotel’s banana bread.
Throughout the stay staff were helpful without being intrusive, which made the trip feel relaxed despite the logistics of travelling with a toddler.
Practical details
The hotel is currently promoting a three-night Bed & Breakfast package priced at €699. The package includes an early-bird two-course dinner on two nights, a two-hour screening in the hotel’s in-house cinema and complimentary tickets to Fota Wildlife Park.

Overall, our two-night stay left us feeling rested and well looked after. The hotel’s family-focused touches and the Fota package make it a solid choice for parents planning a short family break in Cork.
