Galway coffee shop closing after owner calls venture a wild adventure

Galway’s café scene will be smaller by the end of August after the owners of a well‑known Salthill coffee shop announced they will close its doors. Kali Coffee Bar on Upper Salthill Road has been part of the city’s hospitality circuit for more than five years and built a national and international reputation.

Owners say the decision was theirs alone

Laura and Enda — the couple behind the business — confirmed on social media that Kali will cease trading on August 28, after “5 years, 8 months and 26 days” in operation. They described the period running the café as intense and rewarding, and said the choice to stop trading was carefully considered.

While admitting the move is bittersweet, the pair stressed that nothing negative precipitated the closure. Instead, they framed it as a deliberate step forward and said they are leaving by choice.

An award-winning local favourite

Under their stewardship, Kali won recognition beyond Galway. The café was listed among the top coffee spots in Europe, produced a Brewers Cup champion, and featured in the European Coffee Trip’s top ten in Ireland. Local press coverage also followed the business’s rise.

Those accomplishments matter to the owners. They said they are proud to have helped put the Galway coffee scene on a wider map and to have created a place that locals value.

Community ties and final celebrations

The couple spoke warmly about the relationships forged at the café. Regulars, new friendships and family milestones — including the couple’s own wedding in the garden — feature in their recollection of life at Kali.

They invited customers to call in before the last day for “a chat, a laugh, a coffee” and to mark the end of this chapter together.

Reaction from customers

News of the closure drew dozens of responses from patrons expressing disappointment but offering good wishes. One commenter wrote, “So sad to hear the news, but best of luck for yer next adventure.” Another added: “I hope the sun shines and coffee pours where you guys follow your dreams.”

Laura and Enda thanked their community for its support and said they are excited for whatever comes next, even as they process the change ahead.
