Princess Eugenie chooses sentimental names for her history-making baby

Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank have revealed the name of their newborn daughter: Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. Born in Lisbon in early August, the baby’s arrival is notable because royal births outside the UK remain rare.

Name honours and family meaning

The couple shared the name around two weeks after the birth, saying it pays tribute to three women close to them, including Eugenie’s grandmother. In a social media message, Eugenie described the family’s first days with the baby as “special, cosy and love-filled.”

She also noted the name reflects ties to both England and Portugal — places the family calls home.

A rare royal birth overseas

The infant was delivered at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal — an unusual location for a royal birth. In the past century only a handful of royal children have been born outside the UK.

Royal births outside the UK remain rare; Adelaide was born at a Lisbon hospital in August 2026.

Recent examples include Princess Lilibet, who was born in Santa Barbara, California, in 2021, and Maud, the daughter of Lord Frederick Windsor and Sophie Winkleman, who was born in California in 2013.

Citizenship and legal implications

Being born in Portugal does not automatically grant the child Portuguese nationality. Portuguese law generally does not confer automatic citizenship to children of foreign nationals born on its soil.

Pathways to Portuguese citizenship include having a parent who has legally resided in the country for five years at the time of birth, or the child living in Portugal legally for a sustained period — for example, ten years — under the conditions outlined by local rules.

By contrast, the baby is eligible for British citizenship because at least one parent is a UK citizen, and UK nationality rules allow children born abroad to British parents to register as British.

Official announcement and birth details

Buckingham Palace confirmed the birth in an official statement, giving the date and time as 3 August 2026 at 6.20pm, and reporting the baby’s weight as 6 pounds 9 ounces. The palace added that the King and Queen and other members of the Royal Family were informed and “delighted” by the news.

Family background

Eugenie, the younger daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah, Duchess of York, and Jack Brooksbank married at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, in October 2018. The pair met on a ski trip in Switzerland in 2011 and became engaged during a trip to Nicaragua in January 2018.

The couple are already parents to two sons: August, born in February 2021, and Ernest, born in May 2023. They announced a third pregnancy earlier this year, posting a photograph of their sons holding a sonogram with the caption that a “Baby Brooksbank” was due in 2026.

The family has spent increasing time in Portugal since 2022, when Mr Brooksbank took up work there, a factor that helps explain the Lisbon birthplace.
