Weekend rain restores green lawns as further showers are forecast

Show summary Hide summary

After a weekend of scattered showers, green is returning to lawns and pastureland across Ireland — a welcome change after a summer of unusually high temperatures. The rain fell unevenly, leaving some areas visibly refreshed while others remain dry.

How much rain fell?

Measurements from Sunday show considerable variation. Across the country, rainfall totals reported ranged from about 1mm in some places to as much as 24mm in others.

Rainfall totals varied widely across the country, from about 1mm to 24mm in places.

Weather observer Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather posted pictures of his garden and noted the disparity. He said the showers were heavy but patchy, which means soil moisture levels are still inconsistent — although his own lawn has greened quickly.

What the forecast says

Met Éireann expects Monday to be mostly drier, but it warned that showery rain could push into the northwest and west during the evening. These bands will be locally heavy.

Tuesday should bring a fair amount of dry weather for much of the country. However, the forecaster said it will be wetter across Ulster and northern areas, with highest temperatures generally between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius.

By Tuesday night, rain is forecast to move up from the southwest, turning conditions wet and breezy and occasionally heavy in places.

Midweek outlook

On Wednesday, overnight rain is expected to clear northeastwards in the morning. That should open the way for a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers, with breezier conditions overall.

Thursday is likely to bring more bright intervals and showers, but the trend into the weekend points to more widespread wet weather. Met Éireann’s guidance indicates the unsettled pattern could persist into the following weekend, with temperatures turning a little cooler and fresher.
